My workshops demystify the basics of North Indian music. In an intensive weekend workshop students are able to learn a basic fixed alap (gradual expansion of the tonal material) as well as a madhya lay khyal (medium tempo song) in each of two rags (melody types)- a morning rag and an evening rag. The basics of tal, the rhythmic basis of Indian music, are communicated via the songs and counting exercises. Breathing exercises and principles from yoga, tai chi, and body therapy are used as aids to centering students and opening their natural voices.
These workshops focus on similar material to the vocal workshops, but all instruments are welcome. Musicians of all types learn the basics of rag improvisation. The culmination of a workshop is a group performance by and to ourselves - always a unique fusion experience.
Extended workshops along the lines of those above can be arranged to meet weekly for eight or ten weeks.
